Code Break Analysis

Code break is an excellent short thriller, though analysing I have notices a couple of things if changed would give out more of a thriller feeling.
When you start looking at the shots you can notice that some of the shots were not included. As you watch the beginning of the movie you can notice that it came on too strong. What would’ve been the better thing to do was to have a POV or even an establishing shot to give sometime for the audience to analyze that it was an interrogation. When the shot of the spitting came up I didn’t understand that he spat on him, what they could have done was a reaction shot of him being spat on.
The sounds for this thriller was used quite well, but there were some parts of the movie were the goon had punched him and it sounded like he was being slapped. Although I liked most of the background sound effects there was one part of the scene where the background sound did not fit. It was the moment where they had brought in the daughter of the main character. There had been too much suspense in music that it sounded less than a thriller and more like a horror. What would’ve been the better would be to have some music building up to give a better effect of a thriller.
To make a movie great you need a series of different items when put together can make a movie look amazing, that is called mise-en-scene. To find out more about the character you have to just look at what they are wearing. The main character is dressed casually in the scene, which makes him look like he was kidnapped of the street. The goons are wearing dark leather jackets which make them look like they have done a lot of bad things to a lot of people and they want to hide it from everyone else. To tell that a person is in charge he must stand out from everyone, and that is what they did when the leader was wearing a army uniform. What I really enjoyed in the scene was the lighting because the setting was filled with a orange light coming from the lights of the room and a hint of blue shining on the actors face.
These certain actors were amazing for this movie because they looked right for the part. The actors did an amazing job in selling the idea that they were real Russian mafia. There were a couple of problems with the make-up, one of the problems were when he was being drowned in the water, the fake blood was being washed off and it is possible to see that it is just make-up. The second problem was that when he was put out of the water he had suddenly turned completely dry. In the movie they had only used one major prop and that was a bowl filled with water, it just looked ridiculous that he was being drowned in a 10cm bowl of water, the overall result of the prop just made the movie look worse. As for the setting, that was my favorite part of the mise-en-scene, a major part of a movie is the setting and in this film it was the best type of location that they could have filmed on.
This movie is a definite thriller, since it has all the suspense, fear, and torcher. This could work as a beginning to a movie where they show a flashback afterwards to explain how he got there.

The Usual Suspect Analysis

In the movie The Unusual Suspect we were supposed to look and analys the movie poster and make notes of it. I first started out by noticing that they are standing in a pyramid structure where the tallest is in the front and then the others are standing beside him, it signifies that the problem is more drawn to the tallest person. He is also the most dressed from all of them, he is wearing a black suit and a red shirt, the red shirt signifies danger and blood that makes him a larger suspect, the black suit that he is wearing over the red shirt also signifies that he has done something bad but he tries to keep that covered. If you really observe the one who is on the far left you can notice that he is wearing a porche jacket, which signifies that he works with cars. The one who is second from the left is wearing all black which signifies that he has done something bad and he want to hide it from the truth. The person who is on the far right looks more of a bartender who looks like he has noticed a crime but not really committed it. Then there is the person who is the second from the right who looks like he is wealthy but has done something to upset the police. All these people are some how related to one huge crime.

Hanna Analysis

We were supposed to watch and analys all the sound that was played in the movie Hanna. We had started out by watching an escape scene in the movie where Hanna tries to gain freedom. We were supposed to listen to both Diegetic sounds and Non-diegetic, roughly enough there was only one piece of diegetic sound that was played. In the 4 minute short video there had been a lot of diegetic sound played in the film, there were a lot more sound effects but these were the ones that I got the:

Door open/close
Humming
Door lock open/closed
Glass break
Gun shots
Light flashing
Amplified breathing
Crawling
Voice through microphone
Wind
Alarm
Hatch opening
Bullet shells hitting the floor
Locker open/close
Disinfectant spray in airlock
Airlock open/close
Etc...

When we watched the movie the second time we were supposed to write a paragraph on how the sound effects the main character. This was what I wrote:

In the beginning of the movie Hanna we can hear the protagonist being trapped in some kind of prison, we can tell that by the sounds of the heavy prison door being locked behind her. The next thing that I looked at was when the protagonist was crying to the antagonist which signified that all hope was lost for her. As the huge heavy prison doors were being spun open there was a
up-beat non-diegetic sound building up which signified that the protagonist will do something that involves her to react to the current situation. As the up-beat music stopes there is a pause of silence which is then transitioned by a neck snapping from the protagonist to the antagonist. Then she starts her epic chase where it is the protagonist vs. the antagonist.

Camera Work

In one of our media classes we had been taught how to set-up a camera, the most basic camera options, and some filming techniques. when we started out our lesson all we had was a bag of a folded tripod and a hard case for the camera. The teachers had split the class into groups and had shown us how to assemble the whole tripod with the camera securely attached to it and afterward made us do it. It was not my first time assembling the tripod, I have done it numerous times before so I was not the one who set it up but I was the one who helped my group mates assemble it. As we finished assembling it we had to make sure that the camera is at the right level, you do that by bubbling the camera which is to make sure bubble is in the marked area that will mean that the camera is leveled.

When we had it all set up the teaches had started talking about the most basic camera options, there was at first the focus. The focus is what makes a shot sharp or blurry, the blurriness all depends on how far is the subject that you are filming. The next thing that we went through is the iris, the iris is the bightness in the shot, when the iris hole is fully open that means that the camera lets in more light to give a brighter shot, when the iris is maximally closed it makes a very dark image, they close the iris if the shot is too bright. Then there is the white balance which is the color of the area in the camera, normally if you're filming in a room without the camera being white balanced then the room will look orangish type of look because the lights in a room will always be orange, to make the room look normal you will have to white balance it. To white balance it you have to focus on something white in the area where you are filming and press and hold the white balance button.

We also learned about framing of a shot and which is the best way of placing your character in a shot. We were taught about the 180 degree rule where when two people are having a conversation there is a imaginary line in between the two people which does not allow the camera to cross over to the other side of the conversation, otherwise that would confuse the audience and make it look like one of the characters is talking to himself.

When we had the lesson with Matt we were supposed to film a short sequence for continuity, continuity is the flow of the movie and if it fits perfectly and not having any continuity errors. One example of a continuity error is when in one shot the main character is having their armes crossed and then in the next shot we see that the character's armed are just hanging down. In the sequence we had used many different types of shots, in our movie we had used a Mid-shot, Close-up, and a Wide shot. I found the sequencing really fun and it was a great practice.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Analysis

In the movie poster The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo you are able to see this one woman standing in the middle of the darkness, all alone. Her standing in the middle of darkness signifies that she is isolated and has no one by her side which makes her week if she was being targeted. To confirm the theory of her being targeted is the red dragon which is looking at her, that signifies her being in great danger hence the red indicating danger and blood. Another aspect worth looking at is that one of her eyes are covered by very black hair, that signifies she has had a horrible history and she is trying to hide it from everyone els. The smoke coming from the right side of the poster signifies that she has angered someone and they are trying to get her in any way possible (the smoke is the rage of the dragon). The soft light that is on her face indicates that although that she is in great danger she still might have hope.

The Shining Analysis

In our media class we were supposed to look and analis the poster for the movie The Shining. I started out in finding the difference between the two people, who is the mad one and who is the good and innocent one. The one aspect that contributes to that theory is the difference in the screen, where one side of the screen is dark signifying the mad dangerous and one side is brighter signifying innocence. One more detail that tells the audience who is the evil and who is the good is that while the woman is in the corner hiding the man with the axe is trying to find her and kill her.

The next aspect that I looked at was the broken door which signifies one of the woman's only protections against this mad man, and the axe is the item that helps this man to achieve his goal to kill her. The next important thing about this movie poster is the facial expressions, it is important because facial expressions are the emotion that lets the audience know whether a person is happy or sad in a film. In this movie poster Jack Nicholson facial expression persuades the audience that he is an insane lunatic by having his eyes looking in one direction signifies that he is trying to find someone. Another aspect about his face is that he has a dirty and unclean face giving more of a empretion of him being a lunatic. The woman in distress is played by Shelley Duvall who persuades the audience by her screaming facial expression that she is scared and in trouble, she also has a knife in her hand which signifies that she will always have some kind of protection against evil.

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, well im sorry but im giving you only 311.

All About Me!

My name is Richards Slesers, I come from a little country in the North-East of Europe called Latvia. My lifes goal is to become a successful filmmaker. When I was in 7th grade in my old international school of ISL I had started out by making my first movie. I had put an incredible amout of time making it, it turned out to be a 15 minute long masterpiece. As time passed I had created more and more movies which were better than the last. When I reached 9th grade I realized that my school had not been teaching my what I exactly wanted which was media. So I had started a journey to find a school that teaches skills in filmmaking, it was just then when I heard about this school in England called Hurtwood House.
